Historic castle badly damaged by Turkey quake

A powerful earthquake that shook parts of Turkey and Syria heavily damaged Gaziantep’s most famed landmark, its historic castle perched atop a hill in the center of the city.The 2nd century Gaziantep castle was severely damaged during the earthquake.Parts of the fortresses’ walls and watchtowers were leveled and other parts heavily damaged.

The powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria early Monday.The quake has toppled hundreds of buildings and killed more than 2,300 people. Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under rubble, and the toll was expected to rise as rescue workers searched mounds of wreckage in cities and towns across the area.The quake was centered about 90 kilometers from the Syrian border outside the city of Gaziantep, a major Turkish provincial capital.
