Hilsa Shad export: Demand increasing since 2022 December

Myanmar exports freshwater and seawater Hilsa shad from its Ayeyawaddy Regionto foreign countries through Yangon and the demand has been increasing inthe market starting from December last year.

In order to preserve the Hilsa shad species, the Department of Fisheries is establishing and maintaining the conservation areas with closed fishing season during the Hilsa shad spawning period between the 15thof September and the 15thof October.Hilsa shad is primarily harvested in Rakhine and Mon states, Dawei and Myeik districts of Tanintharyi Region, Bago Region and Yangon Region. The best fishing spot are Ayeyawaddy Region and Mon State, it’s learnt.
