Heavy snow pummels southern Germany, posing avalanche risk

11 January 2019

Continuous heavy snowfall has caused traffic chaos, closed schools and posed a high risk of avalanches in many southern areas of Germany on Thursday. The severe weather condition has forced authorities to dispatch more winter service vehicles to clear snow.

Numerous train routes in southern German states were blocked and rail tracks were completely covered by snow. Since Wednesday, the second highest avalanche warning level is in effect in the Bavarian Alps and many schools remain closed for safety reasons although parents of pupils at primary and secondary schools are allowed to send their children to school. German meteorological authorities forecast another round of wind and snowdrift in the coming days, and 5 to 20 centimeters of snow in the Bavarian Alps mountain ranges.
