The southern region of Brazil, specifically Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states, has experienced severe rainfall since the beginning of the week.

Flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Brazil have claimed at least six lives over the past week, authorities said on Sunday. Thousands of people sheltered in gymnasium.

Volunteers worked to clear streets blocked by mud and debris left by the river. In Santa Catarina state, fatalities were also reported from heavy rains that began on Tuesday, and the governor declared a state of emergency in 64 towns.

In the four hardest-hit cities, the rain that fell in three days was more than double what was expected for the entire month of November.
