Heavy overnight rains flooded Portugal’s capital Lisbon into Thursday, submerging cars, streets and public transport stations, while blocking some metro lines. A 55-year-old woman died after becoming trapped by the water in the basement where she lived, the national Civil Protection Agency said. The intense rainfall caused authorities to shut roads and city tunnels around the capital.
Among hundreds of incidents reported, local hospital San Francisco Xavier lost part of its roof and water flooded some of the building. The Civil Protection Agency has called on citizens not to leave their homes and to try to avoid low-level areas. Portuguese weather agency has placed all Lisbon districts under red alert and forecast the rain to last until Friday.
