Health Sector Improvement: 1st Kidney Transplant performed at NPT General Hospital

The first kidney tranplant was performed at Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital (1000-bedded) on 11th December. Union Minister for Health Professor Dr. Thet Khaing Win together with the officials visited the hospital on Thursday to comfort the kidney-transplant patient and the kidney donor.

He also met with the professors/specialists, nurses, hospital superitendent and healthcare staff and gave instructions. The patient is a 30-year old man from Pyinmana Township, Nay Pyi Taw Union Terrority and the donor is his 54-year-old father.

The kidney transplant was performed by the professors and specialists from Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital (1000-bedded), Yangon Specialty General Hospital (500-bedded), Yangon General Hospital, Mandalay General Hospital and No.2 Tatmadaw Hospital (1000-bedded).

The transplanting procedure started at 9:30 AM on 11th December by taking out the kidney from the donor and transplanting it for the patient at 11:30 AM. The procedure took a total of 5 hours and it was successfully completed at 2:30 PM in the afternoon.

Both the patient and the donor are in good health condition and they are being treated by the specialists and nurses for necessary medical care in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital.  Kidney transplant is being carried out monthly at the Yangon Specialty Hospital (500-bedded), and this is the first time to be carried out at Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital (1000-bedded). Plans are underway to be able to perform the kidney transplant operation on a regular basis.
