A vaccination campaign against cholera has begun in Haiti with health workers going door to door in some neighbourhoods of the capital of Port-au-Prince.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), shipped around 1.17 million doses of oral cholera vaccines in early December as cases continue to rise in the country.

The spread of disease came as the capital is suffering widespread violence with armed gangs taking control of several parts of the city. Many patients have died because they’re unable to reach a hospital in time due to it being unsafe to leave their communities.

Cholera is a bacteria that sickens people who swallow contaminated food or water, and it can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea, in some cases leading to death.
