Guterres reaffirms UN's support for Iraq

UN Secretary-General António Guterres began his tour of Iraq on Wednesday, where he reiterated the United Nations' commitment to support Iraqi efforts to advance peace, human rights and sustainable development. On Thursday, Guterres will visit a camp for internally displaced people and a rehabilitation center in the north of the country.

António Guterres, UN Secretary-General said "From here in Iraq I want to send a message to all other member states with nationals in such camps it is time for them to to significantly step up the efforts to facilitate the safe and dignified repatriation of their nationals in line with applicable international law and guided by the best interest of children in Iraq."

On Wednesday, Guterres met with Iraq's President Abdul Latif Muhammad Rashid, Prime Minister and Parliament Speaker. The Secretary-General will also meet and hear from representatives of youth and women’s rights groups and hold a town hall with UN staff.
