Guterres address on Good Friday Agreement

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a video message on Tuesday appealed for sustainable peace in time of continued risk at a conference to mark a quarter century of Northern Ireland’shistoric 1998 peace accord. The Good Friday Agreement has been held up around the world as proof that bitter enemies can make peace.

Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General said “These agreements shows the importance of continued engagement and efforts, even in the most adverse conditions. And as conflicts raged around the globe, including in Europe, we need the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement more than ever.”  It committed armed groups to stop fighting and set up a Northern Ireland legislature and government with power shared between unionist and nationalist parties.
