Glacier collapse occurs at the Birch Glacier above Blatten, Switzerland

A major collapse occurred on Wednesday afternoon at the Birch Glacier above Blatten, Switzerland. According to the regional management team, the large glacier collapse appeared to be a significant event feared. The debris had reportedly reached the village of Blatten. Video footage shows huge masses falling from the Birch Glacier into the valley, with thunderous sounds.

The command headquarters said the situation was “very dire” and large parts of the village were affected. In order to react as quickly as possible, and to be able to mobilize resources more quickly if necessary, the Valais State Council had declared a special situation. The emergency services and authorities are currently working to obtain a more precise picture of the situation.
