A crane lifted a giant fir tree and placed it into position in the center of St. Peter's Square Tuesday morning in preparation for the holiday season. The 113-year-old fir tree is 28 meters tall and weighs eight tons.

It comes from Andalo, a small town in the northern Italian region and it will be later decorated with wood spheres handmade by volunteers. Alberto Parli, the mayor of Andalo, said they were proud of having been able to donate this year's tree. Following the installation and decoration of the tree, the Vatican will hold a Christmas tree lighting ceremony on December 10th in St Peter's square.
