Germany’s new government confirmed it will maintain its policy of turning away asylum seekers at the border despite a recent court ruling opposing the practice. The policy, introduced shortly after Chancellor Friedrich Merz took office, aims to prevent irregular migration.
A Berlin court ruled that asylum seekers cannot be rejected before determining which state is responsible for their claims. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the government believes it has a solid legal basis and will continue enforcing the turnbacks. Legal proceedings are ongoing, but no changes to the policy are planned.
