German government on Qatar 2022, Turkey

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, who is currently visiting Turkey, plans to travel on to Qatar to support Germany at its opening match against Japan on Wednesday, a ministry spokesman announced in Berlin Monday.

Faeser's trip to the World Cup had been uncertain in recent weeks, whose ministry remit includes sports.

Asked whether the armband issue would change her view, Sascha Lawrenz said Faeser has stressed that she "wants to continue the dialogue with the Qatari government on reforms there, particularly the improvement of the human rights situation."
