German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visits the country's armed forces

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the Operational Command of the German Federal Armed Forces on German Armed Forces Day.

During his visit, the Chancellor said his visit comes at a time when security policy is particularly important. At the NATO summit in The Hague on Wednesday, the historic decision was taken to invest up to 5 per cent of gross domestic product in defence in the broadest sense, with 3.5 per cent going to defence alone and a further 1.5 per cent to infrastructure. He elaborated not to take security for granted and to make strenuous efforts to secure freedom, peace and security.
