A forum for gender equality work groups was held at the office of the Union Election Commission (UEC) in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday.
The two-day forum is jointly organized by the UEC and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES). UEC Chairman U Hla Thein gave an opening speech saying that the discussions will be focused on the importance of the CEDAW and the need for collaborating with people from different sectors to promote the participation of women voters and women Hluttaw representatives in politics and elections.
He added that the UEC has tried to promote women’s participation in elections and politics in many ways since 2016. Training courses and workshops have been organized with the help of international organizations and civil society groups to raise awareness on the issue.
The groups discussed the topics including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) 1997, and participation of women in Myanmar politics.
The forum will also discuss future tasks included in the Gender Policy Action Plan of the Strategic Plan (2019-2022) of the UEC.
