Franciscan monks award UN chief Peace Lamp

The United Nations' Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was awarded the Lamp of Peace of Saint Francis by the order of Franciscan Monks in Assisi on Saturday, in recognition of his commitment to humanitarian work.

The lamp was accepted by Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization on behalf of Guterres, who was unable to attend due to the coronavirus pandemic. During his acceptance speech, Guterres said peace was the U.N.'s "guiding star, the most precious goal".

previously, The Lamp of Peace has been awarded to Juan Manuel Santos, former President of Colombia, and former Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel.
