Foreign residents and locals savored a local New Year’s dish at an international exchange event held in western Japan’s Kagawa Prefecture.

Fourteen people, including some from the United States and Indonesia, took part in the cooking event in Sakaide City on Sunday. It was organized by the Sakaide International Association. They were divided into groups to prepare Japanese rice cake soup with vegetables.

The dish features “anmochi” — rice cakes with sweet bean jam — in a soup made from white miso, a fermented soybean paste. Many of the foreign participants said it was their first time to try the soup and found its sweet and slightly salty taste to be delicious.
