Ford Escort owned by Princess Diana sells at auction

A Ford Escort owned by Princess Diana went under the hammer in the U.K. Saturday, for a winning bid of 650 thousand pounds (Sterling.) Ordered and specified for the late princess, the black 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo S1, which has 24,961 miles on the clock, was heralded as "the car of the day" by auctioneer Jonathan Humber, during Silverstone Auctions' sale of classic cars and race cars at the Silverstone Circuit Formula 1 race track in Northamptonshire.

Bidders from Dubai, Coventry and West Fargo were among those vying to secure the historic vehicle, the last Ford Escort owned by the late princess. A buyer in Alderly Edge - a village in Cheshire, northwest England - won the auction, with a bid worth just under 764 thousand U.S. dollars. The car was auctioned from a private collection.
