20 February 2019

China's Forbidden City opened its doors to the public for a rare night tour and light show on Tuesday, with thousands of people arriving for the first event of its kind in 94 years. Officially known as the "Lantern Festival night in the Forbidden City", the event takes place over two consecutive nights on Tuesday and Wednesday in Beijing.

The online registration page crashed for more than an hour on Monday as people rushed to get a limited number of free spots to attend the festival. The Lantern Festival marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations.
