Floods triggered by days of heavy monsoon rains inundated a residential area near the Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Monday, leaving families stranded. More than nine million people have been affected by monsoon floods in South Asia, according to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

Officials have said hundreds of thousands in Bangladesh have been stranded and thousands of hectares of farmland submerged, as floods hit the nation already grappling with coronavirus. Flooding in Bangladesh has been made worse by heavy rains in the neighboring Indian state of Assam. Millions have been forced to flee their homes in Assam after the Brahmaputra river that flows from Tibet into India and then into Bangladesh burst its banks.
