Floods in Kalaw: Relief and rescue measures for flood victims

Due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi and the storm in the Bay of Bengal, consecutive rainfall has caused the surge of rivers and creeks, overflow of dam, inundating some wards, villages and Townships across the country recently.

Since 10th of September, 3 wards in Kalaw Township of Shan State (South) have been affected by severe floods. On 13th September, Shan State Chief Minister U Aung Aung inspected flood conditions of the wards. During the inspection, the Chief Minister gave necessary instructions on accessing drinking water and restoration of electricity and telecommunications.

Subsequently, the Chief Minister and party oversaw the collective cleaning activities carried out at the areas where the flood water had receded and comforted the residents. Next, the Chief Minister and party visited Kalaw Myoma Pariyatti Sar Thin Taik and met with the flood victims.

There, the Chief Minister comforted the residents saying that tasks are being carried out to restore electricity and telecommunications as soon as possible. The state government is making exerted efforts to ensure the safety of the flood victims and provide necessary supplies to them, he added.

After providing foodstuff to the flood victims, cash assistance was provided to the Tatmadawmen, members of police force, fire brigade and red cross society who are actively participating in rescue measures.

Later, the Chief Minister met with departmental officials of the Kalaw District and stressed the availability of drinking water, timely restoration of the electricity and telecommunications. He also called for the concerted efforts of the officials in reopening of the schools.
