Flood Prevention Measures: Action plan to prevent inundation in Myitkyina

Kachin State Government clarified the action plan to prevent inundation in Myitkyina to the local community on Thursday. Chief Minister U Khet Htein Nan called for harmonious cooperation of local populace in implementing the flood prevention in the town.

Every year during monsoon, low lying areas in Myitkyina has seen the inflow of river water, causing inundation. During 2024, more than 40% of the city area has inundated, affecting over 50,000 residents. Unlike the previous, sand silting in the riverbed has worsen the surge of water level with 5 to 8 ft along the river bank.

The Head of State has guided to draft a budget plan for prevention measures to be implemented in coming fiscal year aftering conducting the feasibility studies. The plans outline the yearly prevention measures including road network, construction of retaining wall, sluice gate, and embankment by dividing six areas.
