Japan is advancing its goal to make renewable energy the country’s primary power source by 2040, with offshore wind identified as a key component. Eight floating turbines, located five kilometres off the Goto Islands in waters up to 140 metres deep, are scheduled to begin commercial operation in January 2026. Each turbine has a capacity of 2,100 kilowatts, collectively forming the country’s first floating offshore wind farm.
Floating structures are designed to withstand earthquakes and typhoons, ensuring stable operation even in extreme weather conditions. Japan’s underwater terrain quickly deepens off the coastline, making floating wind farms more suitable than fixed-bottom installations.
