The Cherry Blossom Festival commenced in Loimwe of Kengtung Township in Shan State (East) on January 1st. Chief Minister U Aung Aung attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.
The ceremony also featured performances by ethnic cultural troupes. This is the fourth edition of the Cherry Blossom Festival, which was first organized in 2022. Last year's festival attracted about 90,000 visitors. Situated more than 5,000 feet above sea level, Loimwe’s cold weather has fostered the thriving of cherry trees.
Shan State received over 1.1 million tourists from both home and abroad as of November 2024. To support the development of the tourism industry, the Shan State Government has provided necessary infrastructure for the convenience of visitors.
The Cherry Blossom Festival aims to attract more tourists, promote the incomes of rural people through the sale of local products, and ensure the long-term conservation of cherry trees. The festival is scheduled to run for five days, with the sale of local products taking place.
