Festival in Thadingyut Period: Annual sand pagoda festival kicks off in Mon State

The seventh month of the Myanmar lunar calendar is called Thadingyut which means “the end of Buddhist Lent”. It coincides with October.

Myanmar people usually do good deeds, family gatherings and celebrate the auspicious occasions.One of the traditional festivals of Mon National races in Myanmar sand sculpture pagoda festival and it is being held at Kyaikkhami and Setse beaches in Thanbyuzayat town of Mon State starting from the morning of 5th waxing moon day of Thadingyut.

Since early morning, visitors from regions and states across the country pay a visit to the Kyaikkhami and Setse beaches by cars and motorcycles as well as devotees donate soft drinks and snacks along the way. Thei Pone Cedi (Sand pagodas) are typically built with three to five tiers.

Representing the floating Buddha stupas arrived at Kyaikkhami town; the celebration of Thei Pone Cedi festival has been thousands of years and held annually from 5th to 9th waxing moon day of Thadingyut preserving Mon customs and traditions.

Likewise, Kyaikkhami Pagoda is a prominent tourist destination site for the pilgrims come from far and near and some tourists to this resort town of Mon State.
