In his address to the United Nations General Assembly, Argentina's president said his country had been "subject to toxic and irresponsible indebtedness with the International Monetary Fund (IMF)." Argentina currently owes some 45 billion US dollars to the IMF - repayment is being negotiated by Fernandez's government.

Fernandez signaled he favors expanding a new common framework for grappling with the debt. A socioeconomic crisis has been dragging on for years in Argentina and deepened during the new coronavirus pandemic. Poverty affects 42% of the population and accumulated annual inflation of more than 50%.
