Hundreds of faithful took part in a procession marking Orthodox Good Friday in the Greek seaside town of Tolo. A flower-decorated epitaph representing the tomb of Christ was carried into the sea, while fishermen set flares alight.

Greeks were preparing to celebrate Orthodox Easter on Sunday, five weeks before a general election and in the middle of a cost of living crisis. The holiday ‒ the most important on the Orthodox religious calendar ‒ is typically celebrated with candlelight midnight church services, spring decorations, coloured eggs and a Sunday meal of spit-roasted lamb.
