Greek-Orthodox Christians attended on Wednesday an annual ceremony at the River Jordan, at the border between the West Bank and Jordan, to commemorate the baptism of Jesus Christ.
The Greek-Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III, led a procession with hundreds of worshippers. The spot is close to where the River Jordan flows into the Dead Sea and is considered the third most important site in Christianity after the Church of the Nativity and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The baptism marks the beginning of Jesus' public ministry. Many modern-day visitors don white robes and immerse themselves in the sacred waters in a show of faith.
