Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro named a former foreign minister Jorge Arreaza on Sunday as his party's candidate for a special gubernatorial election in the home state of his predecessor and mentor, Hugo Chávez.

Maduro declared Arreaza as the ruling party's candidate via a livestream connected to a gymnasium in the rural state of Barinas. The announcement came less than a week after the country's highest court disqualified Governor, Freddy Superlano when he was leading the vote count.

Opposition leader Juan Guaidó appeared by surprise yesterday at an opposition rally where the wife of disqualified candidate for Governor, Freddy Superlano, was announced as the new opposition candidate for new state election.

This weekend, the most important leaders from both the opposition and the ruling party went to Barinas to try to mobilize their supporters for the new election.
