European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen announces on Tuesday that the EU's executive arm will recommend that member states open formal membership talks with Bosnia.

Ursula von der Leyen, EU Commission President said "The good news comes now. This is the reason that we will decide to recommend to the Council to open accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina. So the message coming from Bosnia and Herzegovina is clear. So our message, as you just did, must be clear too. The future of Bosnia and Herzegovina lies in our union."

The Commission's recommendation will need to be approved by all 27 EU leaders, who are set to decide in a summit next week in Brussels.
