On April 4, the European Union (EU) and five Central Asian countries convened their inaugural summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. This landmark event signifies a pivotal step in enhancing economic and strategic partnerships between the regions.

European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen led the EU delegation. Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted a significant increase in trade between the EU and Central Asia over the past seven years, reaching approximately $60 billion.

He expressed hope that the summit would mark the beginning of a new phase in comprehensive relations. The summit underscores the EU's recognition of Central Asia's growing geostrategic importance and its commitment to building long-term partnerships that balance economic, security, and human rights considerations.
