Eradicating Forced Labour: National Complaints Mechanism meeting

The National Complaints Mechanism – NCM held a meeting at the Ministry of Labour in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday. Union Minister U Chit Swe in his capacity as the NCM Chairman attended the meeting and made a speech.

The attendees discussed the work undertakings for eradicating forced labour, case tackling and future plans. Myanmar has been working for eradication of forced labour since 2002 in cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO). A memorandum of understanding was signed between Myanmar and ILO, along with the appointment of the ILO Liaison Officer.

In addition, the Supplementary Understanding (SU) was signed in 2007 with yearly extension till 2018. The ILO Yangon Office and the Ministry of Labour joinly established the Complaints Mechanism to tackle the forced labour cases.

Once the completion of the MOU, the work action plan for eradicating forced labour for 2019-2021 was implemented under the Decent Work Country Program (2018-2021). The National Complaints Mechanism was established in December 2019, and efforts are being made to tackle the forced labour cases.
