Enforcement of Law: Implementation of Public Military Service Law in Myanmar

The State Administration Council has announced that the Public Military Service Law, enacted by the State Peace and Development Council through Order No.27/2010 on 4th November 2010, will come into effect on 10th February 2024, as specified in Section 1(b) of the Law.

The forthcoming regulations, procedures, directives, orders, and instructions pertaining to the law will be issued by the Ministry of Defence.Section 385 of the Constitution emphasizes that “Every citizen has the duty to safeguard independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.”

Likewise, Section 386 outlines that “Every citizen has the duty to undergo military training in accord with the provisions of the law and to serve in the Armed Forces to defend the Union.”

The introduction of the Public Military Service Law underscores that “Every citizen is under a duty to safeguard the Three Main National Causes-Non-disintegration of the Union, Non-disintegration of national solidarity and Perpetuation of sovereignty).

In order to serve that duty, the State Peace and Development Council has instituted the law mandating that every citizen undergo military training and serve in the armed forces to defend the State”.
