27 September 2018

A press briefing on “Forever White Ribbon Film Festival” was held in Yangon on Thursday.

White Ribbons are symbols of end to violence against women – their 16 days campaign is conducted from the 25th of November to the 10th of December every year. This year, the campaign includes the “Forever White Ribbon Film Festival” to raise the public awareness about gender equality and elimination of Violence Against Women.

Member, White Ribbon Film Committee, Naw Czaarina Pan Po said “We will select the films based on the content of anti-violence against women and gender equality. We are also planning to have the selected films screened on TV channels. And we will make the opening of film festival in the evening of the 25th the November at the public place. The popular choice award will be chosen by the public at the screening dates.”

Films must be with English subtitle and no longer than 45 minutes. Short films and documentaries with the theme of gender equality are open to the festival. 1,500 USD will be presented for the best short film and best documentary award each and 1,000 USD for the popular choice award. Films are to be submitted to the office of Gender Equality Network in Yangon on the 5th of November.

Member, White Ribbon Film Committee, Phyo Zeyar Kyaw said “Usually, as the main purpose of the film festival, we won’t be screening at the cinema because coming to cinema will be a sort of burden for some people. So, we will be screening at the public place so that more people can come enjoy and have awareness.

The festival will be held within the White Ribbon Campaign from the 25th of November to the 10th of December in Yangon, Mandalay, Taunggyi, Myitkyina and Hpa-An. The theme for White Ribbon Campaign 2018 is Protection of Women against Violence by Law.
