Chairman of the Union Election Commission (UEC) U Thein Soe received a delegation led by Sholban Kara-Ool, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma, Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

The meeting at the UEC office in Nay Pyi Taw discussed signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Union Election Commission and the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, preparations for holding free and fair elections, the conditions for applying the proportional representation system in the elections to be held, verification of political party establishment and registration rights and continuation of cooperation between the two countries.

The UEC chairman also stressed that the weaknesses of the last elections have been analyzed and laws have been implemented to prevent vote fraud in the upcoming elections. Political parties will also have the right to observe and cooperate with the voting process. The commission will deal with all political parties in accordance with the law and will check whether the establishment and registration of political parties will have to be conducted in accordance with the law.

Any political party that violates the laws will be dealt with and it is important for political parties not to have foreign influences. Political parties are responsible for the legislative and administrative sectors, and Myanmar, which is still a young democracy, must work hard to turn out good political parties and good people.

The Union Election Commission will coordinate with the Central Election Commission of Russia and cooperate in election-related matters, the UEC Chairman added.
