Salvadoran lawmakers on Tuesday passed a constitutional reform proposed by President Nayib Bukele to allow sentences of life imprisonment for "murderers, rapists and terrorists." El Salvador's legislature voted nearly unanimously to increase the maximum sentence for certain crimes, which is currently 60 years.

In 2022, state of emergency was declared to quell gang affiliations as authorities had arrested 91,000 people. Because of that, the crackdown had reduced homicide rates to historic lows.
