Ecuadorian police announced on Saturday that they had located eight human heads, which were found in the coastal province of Guayas. Police Commander in Guayas said the leading hypothesis for the massacre is a clash between criminal gangs.

The victims were murdered in the neighboring coastal province of Manabí, where five human heads were found hanging and displayed alongside a warning pamphlet on January 11th  on the tourist and fishing beach of Puerto López. Police said that they had carried out control and surveillance operations in the area amid an ongoing state of emergency enforced in nine of the country's 24 provinces, including Manabí.
