In order to raise awareness of Women’s legal rights in Myanmar, a Handbook on “Key Laws Impacting Women In Myanmar” was launched on Wednesday in Yangon. The book was brought out by The Asia Foundation and Charity Oriented Myanmar.
“Key Laws Impacting Women In Myanmar” Handbook brings together all existing laws and rights relevant to women in Myanmar in an easy way to understand with illustrative format. The Handbook includes laws that can protect women from various forms of violence and discrimination and explanation on what constitutes violence and discrimination. It also shows ways to seek legal assistance as well as hotline numbers and other channels that can be used when women find themselves in vulnerable situations.
Chairman, Bill Committee (Ayeyawaddy Region Hluttaw), Khin Win said “This handbook is a collection of laws impacting on women. There are many laws but most of the people don’t know the value of them. Producing this handbook will help them know the value of laws.”
A roundtable discussion on “Women and Laws in Myanmar” by three experts also took place along with the handbook launch. It is also learnt that about 70 participants including government officials from the Department of Social Welfare, representatives from civil society organizations, women networks and associations, parliamentarians, members of different partners attended the event.
