Efforts For Safe Thingyan: Meeting To Celebrate Lively Yangon Thingyan Festival Safely

11 April 2018

To celebrate a lively Yangon Thingyan Festival safely, a coordination meeting took place at the Yangon Region Government Office on Wednesday.

The meeting brought officials from the Yangon Region Government, Myanmar Police Force and Yangon City Development Committee as well as pandal owners/organizers and many other officials. The meeting focused on supervisory and security procedures for the 4-day water festival celebration starting on the 13th of April.

Deputy Director, Yangon Region Government Office, Khin Hla Myint said "Only 23 medium and large sized pandals were registered and deposited at YCDC so far. Yangon Region Government allows pandal construction in every township. Concerning governmental celebration, we have the Yangon Mayor pandal in Kyauktada Township. We are trying our best to have a lively and safe Thingyan celebration."

The Yangon Region Government laid down 46 rules and regulations to be followed by pandal constructors on April 5. Most pandal construction across Yangon Region was found to be uncompleted despite the rule of finishing pandal construction three days prior to the Thingyan festival.

Police Captain, Yangon Region Police Force, Myint Htwe said "The security team and supervisory team on pandal construction examined the pandals for the first time a few days ago and most are unfinished. We put security as priority to reduce crime rates during Thingyan. We have supervisory offices in 5 locations; Yangon Region Government Office, Yangon City Hall, Thuwanna, IBC and Myakyuntha. We will tighten security as there will be a walking Thingyan too."

The pandals across Yangon will be examined for the last time on the 12th of April and those who break the rules, like not having CCTVs or fire extinguishers and unfinished pandals will be taken down.
