Efforts for high yield per acre: Union Minister meets officials of agriculture sector in Kengtung

It is necessary to implement reclamation of highland farming instead of shifting cultivation method to provide the needs of living and food of the locals of highland region and to improve their socio life.

Measures are being undertaken for the development of agriculture and livestock breeding of Shan State and production of value-added finished products, it was said by Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung when meeting with officials of agriculture sector in Kengtung of Shan State on Friday.

The Union Minister also pointed out that the SAC Chairman Prime Minister instructed to carry out cultivation in the remaining cultivable lands, to extend oil crops cultivation and to prioritize on per acre high yield.

Depending on the different geographical and weather conditions, it is important to make research on agriculture crops. He urged the region research center to make creative idea to apply as a good chance for achieving the tasks.

Later, the State and district level officials reported ongoing tasks in respective sectors and future plans on which the Union Minister gave necessary instructions.

There are a total of more than 360,000 acres of 10 main crops including over 280,000 acres of monsoon paddy and 8000 acres of summer paddy in Shan State (East).

In Kengtung District, there are over 210,000 acres of cultivated land and the 10 main crops are cultivated on more than 190,000 acres of land.
