On June 3, Ecuador's National Assembly approved a constitutional reform permitting the establishment of foreign military bases within the country. The reform passed with 82 votes in favor, 60 against, and 6 abstentions.

It now awaits approval through a national referendum, the date of which will be determined by electoral authorities. President Daniel Noboa, who began his full term in late May, advocates for this reform to enhance international cooperation in combating drug trafficking. He argues that Ecuador has become a significant hub for narcotics trafficking since the closure of the U.S. military base in Manta in 2009, a move initiated by former President Rafael Correa .
