Earthquake in Maubin: The quake left 2 deaths and buildings destroyed

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology announced that an earthquake with a Richter Scale 4.8 occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres at a latitude of 16.98 degrees north and a longitude of 95.67 degrees east, about 33 miles west-northwest of Kaba Aye seismological observatory, and about five miles south-southeast of Nyaungdon at 4:23 pm on 7 June 2023.

As a result of the earthquake, the historical Shwebonmyint Pagoda in Maubin, Ayeyawady Region, was destroyed, and the monastery building of Mogok Meditation Centre 44 and some parts of Maubin University collapsed. A nun and one woman were killed, according to a local. There were five earthquakes in Maubin Township on Wednesday, once at 2:50 pm, once at 4:20 pm, once at 4:30 pm, once at 4:55 pm and once after 5:00 pm. The earthquake also hit Nyaungdon, Bogale, Pantanaw, Mawlamyinekyun, Wakema, Pyapon, Hinthada, Kyaiklat, Kyonmangay, Kyonpyaw, Danubyu, and Yangon.
