Hundreds of motorists stranded on a Virginia highway for more than 15 hours in freezing conditions, after many posted increasingly desperate messages on social media calling for help.

Motorists were stuck overnight on Interstate 95 after a crash brought traffic to a halt and a winter storm dumped nearly a foot of snow. State officials sent out emergency cellphone notifications that help was on the way after motorists said in social media postings that they were running out of food, fuel and water in chilly conditions. Monday's traffic snarl was caused by a wreck involving six tractor trailers. The Virginia Department of Transportation said around daybreak Tuesday that its crews would start taking people off the roadway wherever they could be reached.
