Dozens Killed As Coal Mine Explodes in Eastern Iran

An explosion at a coal mine in eastern Iran killed dozens of people and injured several others, with many feared trapped, authorities said on 22 September. The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) said 30 workers died and 17 others who were injured were transferred to hospitals after the explosion at the coal mine in Tabas, in South Khorasan province.

The IRCS said its president and about 30 volunteers were deployed to the area to assist in the emergency operation. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian sent his condolences to the victims’ families, adding that the ministers of labour and security were on their way to Tabas to investigate and deal with the issue.
