On August 10th, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation held a meeting to discuss prevention measures for flooding and land erosion in the Ayeyawady and Bago Regions.
Since early July, the Ayeyawady River has surged, causing widespread inundation in many towns, along with erosion of riverbanks and embankments. During the meeting, officials reviewed strategies to mitigate the disaster and discussed long-term plans for the durability of embankments.
Deputy Minister U Bo Bo Kyaw outlined effective methods to reduce the impact of the disaster with long-term benefits. The Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department, under the Ministry, is focusing on the durability of dams and embankments to prevent breaches that could inundate towns and agricultural lands.
The department is also implementing erosion prevention measures for the Ayeyawady River Bank in collaboration with related agencies.
