The marine resources are now getting depleted due to overexploitation of fish, shrimp and other aquatic animal resources in the Myanmar Sea.
Due to over use of marine resources, it’s become gradually depleting. A research on Myanmar’s marine resources conducted in 1979 recorded the presence of marine resources at 750,000 tonnes and in 2013 and 2018, they were declined to just over 30 tonnes.
Excessive use of marine resources has resulted in the loss of 60% of underwater and 80% of surface water resources. The research for the existence of marine resources in the Myanmar Sea was conducted three times from 1979 to 2018, and there were international warnings upon overexploitation under and above water surface. Marine resources from Tanintharyi Region have been exported to the fish market in Ranong , Thailand for generations.
There are more than 1,500 boats for inshore and offshore fishing in the region and are more than 6,000 licensed fishing boats in Myeik District, and the fishing is higher than the volume of marine resources. Therefore, the District Fisheries Department is renewing the old fishing boat licenses without doing for the new ones.
