Venezuela’s National Assembly has sworn in Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as interim president after Nicolás Maduro was removed from office. Rodríguez, 56, who has served as vice president since 2018, took the oath during a parliamentary session held days after Maduro was taken into U.S. custody and transferred to New York to face criminal charges.

The session opened with lawmakers calling for Maduro’s release. Earlier, Maduro appeared before a federal court in New York, where he pleaded not guilty to multiple charges and said he continued to consider himself Venezuela’s president. The judge said the case would proceed at a later stage. Rodríguez will serve as interim president pending further political developments.
