At least nine people were dead and more than 20 people were injured in Costa Rica after a public transport bus fell Saturday into a 75-meter cliff on the Inter-American Highway, according to the Costa Rican Red Cross and the Public Safety Ministry.

Rescue workers were still working on the rescue in the area known as Cambronero, some 72 kilometers west of San José, on the route that connects to the Pacific coastal province of Puntarenas. The Red Cross attributed the accident to a landslide on the mountain road, which pushed two light vehicles and these in turn pushed the bus, which plunged off the road. At the moment, 27 injured had been transported in varying conditions, at least three in serious condition, according to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund. The Ministry of Security and the Fire Department updated the death toll to nine. The crashed bus operated on the public transport route between San José and the province of Santa Cruz de Guanacaste, in the northwest of the country.
