Deadly fire at mine in southern Peru

A fire at a gold mine in southern Peru has killed several people. Local authorities and police have arrived near the site of the mine in the Arequipa region. The Public Prosecutor’s Office, in a statement, said the fire occurred inside the mine in the Yanaquihua District.

The removal of the bodies would take place with the presence of specialized police personnel from homicide, criminal inspection, and a physicist, who are traveling to the area from Arequipa. Preliminary information from the National Police in the area indicates that 27 people died; however, the official number will be known at the time of the removal of the bodies.

The bodies will be taken to the morgue in the city of Arequipa. The Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating the cause of the incident.
