A dolphin lies dead on the shores of an Alvarado beach, in the Mexican state of Veracruz, following a hydrocarbon spill that began on March 1 along the Gulf of Mexico coastline. A large oil spill contaminated about 230 km of coastline across the states of Veracruz and Tabasco.

Beaches including Alvarado were polluted with crude oil and tar-like residues.  Local fishermen and residents reported dead marine animals, including a dolphin and sea turtles, washing up along the coast. Scientists and authorities are investigating the cause, but officials suspect a private oil tanker operating near Tabasco may have been responsible.
